Public toilets in Barcelona

Monday, November 8th, 2010, 9:08 am

Some of you might find it strange that we write about this topic. But you would be surprised how often we have questions about the availability of public toilets.

In General

Easy to find toilets

In Catalonia rest rooms are called aseos, servicios, or lavabos. They are labeled caballeros for men and damas or señoras for women. There is no city run public toilet system in Barcelona, however the toilet situation is rather good. You should not have problem finding a clean public toilet. All attractions and museums have toilets. The Plaça Catalunya also has coin operated toilets at street level. All the major shopping centers have public toilets as well.

Bars & Shops

It’s OK to use Shops’ and Bars’ toilets

Any bar/café, even the smallest one, must have a toilet. Some are only for customer’s use. If you are in need you can go into any bar or café and use their rest rooms. El Corte Inglés department store has nice and clean rest rooms. It is located on Plaça de Catalunya. It is worth remembering this location.

Other shopping centers that you want to remember are Boulevard Rosa, La Illa Diagonal and El Triangle (the latter charges 20 cents unless you have a receipt from any of its shops).

Underground Public Toilets

There are a few

There are also free underground public toilets on La Rambla near Plaça Reial. They are open non-stop and supervised 24 hours a day, free, always have paper and are reasonably clean.

Urination on the Street

Strictly forbidden

Barcelona has bad reputation for urination on the streets. You must know that it is strictly forbidden. Unfortunately many people do it. But it is against the law. Don’t do it.

Güell Park

Go to the toilet at the entrance

All attractions have toilets. The only place that is a bit challenging is Guell Park. The only normal toilet is close to the entrance. If you continue up into the park you only find portable rest rooms. If you dislike these, go to the rest room at the entrance.

PromptGuides Recommends

Bring moist towels and disinfectant lotions

You will find that many toilets run out of soap and paper towels. This is especially true around touristy places where many people go to bathrooms. PromptGuides recommends that you bring moist towels with you and perhaps a small bottle of disinfectant lotions. It is a good idea to bring it from home. They can be bought in Spain, but you may not know the brand to look for. They are also very useful on your way to Barcelona on airplanes/train/airports.
