Barcelona Attractions to visit with children

If you visit Barcelona with your kids you should not miss the following six attractions.

1. Barcelona Zoo

Barcelona Zoo is home to over 4,000 animals representing 400 species. It can be found in Parc de Ciutadella. Dolphin shows are performed twice daily and there is plenty of shade and picnic areas. Playgrounds are available for younger children. Kids may also enjoy the petting zoo and pony rides.

“Morning at the Zoo” is a special program for kids between 4–11 yrs. Children learn about how animals live in the zoo, the way dolphins are trained and meet the zoo vet.

2. Barcelona Aquarium

Barcelona Aquarium is the largest aquarium in Europe and offers a wide range of marine life. It is a must see attraction with kids if you are in the city.

TIP: Buy your tickets online to receive a 10% discount and avoid the lines

Special Programs include ‘sleeping with the sharks’. Kids watch and learn about sharks and what they do after dark. Children also experience marine life as it wakes up. The program costs €75.

3. Spanish village (Poble Espanyol)

Spanish village is an open-air architectural museum. It demonstrates the variety of historic Spanish architecture. In its some 40 workshops kids can see 21 different types of craftsmanship at work. Plenty green space is available for kids to play around. Sundays offer special children’s activities and shows.

Parents can enjoy shops, art galleries and restaurants. Picnic areas are provided for parents and family.

4. Magic Fountain

Magic Fountain offers a thrilling experience for kids with its spectacular music and light show. Your kids will be awestruck. The shows last 15 minutes. They start after dawn and run every 30 minutes.

The fountain is located in front of Palau Nacional (National Art Museum of Catalonia)

5. Tibidabo Amusement Park

Another classic destination in Barcelona with kids is the Tibidabo Amusement Park. The small amusement park is located on the north-west part of the city on the Tibidabo hill.

Next to the breathtaking panorama, a number of old-fashioned and more modern rides will keep your kids happy. Take the funicular to approach the place. The kids will enjoy the ride.

Parents will enjoy the view and can also visit the spectacular Temple of the Sacred Heart next to the amusement park.

6. Montjuïc Castle (Castell de Montjuïc)

The castle is situated on Montjuic hill and houses the Military museum and the Museum of Comics and Illustration. The place offers breathtaking view on the sea and Barcelona.

Take the cable car to get up to the hill. The great views of Barcelona will wow your kids and keep them engaged during the ride. There is a nice, grassy and shady picnic area in the castle that is an excellent place for families with kids. You can keep your kids happy with delicious crepes that are sold from a van. It arrives around 6pm.

Close to the castle’s drawbridge you will find a playground which features 2 extra long slides that will thrill your kids.

In the summer months, parents may enjoy a few relaxing moments in La Caseta del Migdia bar at the back of the castle. The Hamaka music festival may be of interest to parents. It takes place 2 or 3 times during the summer.
