Things you need to know:
- Central Station (Centraal Station) is Amsterdam's train station servicing more then 1400 trains a day
- It was built between 1884 and 1889 to the plans of Petrus Josephus Hubertus Cuypers in Neo-Renaissance style
- Before its construction could begin, three artificial islands had to be built supported by thousands of wooden piles
- Although today the station is an attraction on its own right, Amsterdammers first disliked and opposed to the idea as it blocked their view of the sea
- Its extravagant red-brick Dutch neo-Renaissance façade depicts themes of travel, trade and Amsterdam's history
