Things you need to know:
- Montelbaans Tower is a fortified tower built in 1512
- The steeple was placed on the tower almost 100 years later in 1606 when the town could finally afford the decoration
- Originally it was erected to defend the Dutch fleet stationed in the Amsterdam harbor
- Today it houses the Amsterdam Water Authority
- The tower overlooks the lovely Oude Schans canal
- Oude Schans was dug in the 16th c. in order to improve ships' access
