- La Madeleine is a Neo-Classical Roman Catholic church
- The best-preserved Roman temple, The Maison Carrée at Nimes, inspired its design
- Originally it was planned as a temple to the glory of Napoleon's army, a cause blunted by the complition of Arc de Triomphe du Carrousel
- It was consecrated in 1842
- The building has 52 Corinthian columns (each 20 meter high) running around its entire exterior
