Things you need to know:
- Leidseplein is a tacky, loud and fun square in the center of the city
- The area is the center of Amsterdam's nightlife
- The square and its vicinity are full of bars, outdoor cafés, coffee shops, restaurants, theaters, and dance clubs
- The square's liveliness is best experienced in the evening when street performers, such as fire-eaters, dancers, singers, family bands, and acrobats start to appear and entertain the crowds
- Leidseplein's most famous landmark is Art Nouveau American Hotel (1902) by Willem Kromhout (on the corner of Leidseplein and Leidsekade)
- This building was a forerunner of the later Amsterdam School of architecture
