Things you need to know:
- Santa Justa Elevator is a 45m high, neo-gothic iron tower with a functioning elevator. It is one of the most beloved landmarks of Lisbon
- The tower was built between 1898 and 1901 to the plans of Porto-born architect Raul Mesnier de Ponsard, an apprentice of Gustave Eiffel
- The purpose of the tower was to transport people between the lower laying streets of Baixa and the higher Carmo Square - the city's highest and lowest points
- The elevator was originally powered by a steam engine
- At the top there is a café with an excellent view on Baixa neighborhood, Rossio Square, and St. George's Castle
