Things you need to know:

  • The current Cathedral was designed by the famous court architect Sir Christopher Wren and built between 1675 and 1710 after its predecessor was destroyed in the Great Fire of London
  • It is a protestant cathedral that has many similarities with St Peter's in Rome, notably in its enormous ornate dome
  • It has the largest swinging bell in Europe, Great Paul, which strikes every day at 1pm
  • The hour bell, Great Tom, strikes the hour and marks the death of royalty and senior churchmen
  • Important services have included the 80th and 100th birthdays of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother; the wedding of Charles, Prince of Wales, to Lady Diana Spencer
  • This church is the symbol of the hope, resilience and strength of the city and the nation it serves
