  • Alfama is Lisbon's oldest and most emblematic quarter. The neighborhood's Arabic-sounding name suggest that its history dates back to Moorish times
  • The quarter retained its medieval street plan and atmosphere. Its hard bedrock foundation saved Alfama from much damage in the earthquake of 1755
  • The area is characterized by narrow cobbled streets, tiny squares, churches, and pastel houses with drying laundry, birdcages and colorful flower on their balconies
  • The name of Alfama comes from the Arabic word 'al-hama' meaning spring or bath, a reference to hot springs in the area
  • The neighborhood is becoming a more and more important Fado quarter with many Fado houses. Fado is a traditional Portuguese music genre
