Things you need to know:
- Gellert Hill is a 140 m high dolomit hill above the Danube on the Buda side in Budapest
- It offers one of the most stunning views of the city with the Buda Castle, the Hungarian Parliament, Margaret Island and the Danube
- The hill takes its name after bishop Gellert who came from Italy around 1000 AD to help St. Stephen, Hungary's first king, to convert his people to Christianity
- Resisiting pagans killed him by rolling him down the hill in a barrel. A statue of him holding a cross on the slope facing Elisabeth Bridge commemorates his death
- The Citadel occupies the top of the hill. The Habsburgs built this fortress as a show of power after suppressing the 1848-49 independence war
- The Statue of Liberty in front of the Citadel is one of the few remaining Soviet monuments. It commemorates the liberation of Hungary from the Nazis
What to do there:
- Start climbing the hill from Gellert square
- Follow one of the many walking paths up the hill
- Enjoy the stunning view of the city that changes with each turn along the way
- Stop at the many viewing platforms and relax on the benches
- On the top of the hill take a look at the statue of liberty and walk around the citadel
- Walk down from the hill on the other side
