- Koninklijk Paleis (Royal Palace) is an imposing Classical palace located at the Dam square
- The edifice and its neoclassical facade symbolize Amsterdam's power in the 17th century
- The palace was originally built as a town hall (1648-55) and only later turned into a royal palace (1808)
- It is the official residence of the royal family, but Queen Beatrix prefers to live in The Hague
- The palace has a breathtaking interior filled with early-19th-century furniture, chandeliers, and marble floors
- A unique feature of the Burgerzall (Citizens' Chamber) is the maps inlaid on the marble floors depicting Amsterdam as the center of the World
- The royal family does not own the royal estates; the state does and makes a budget of 4 million € available for there maintenance. The Queen earns an additional net income of 750.000 €
