  • Before its construction could begin, three artificial islands had to be built supported by thousands of wooden piles
  • Although today the station is an attraction on its own right, Amsterdammers first disliked and opposed to the idea as it blocked their view of the sea
  • Its extravagant red-brick Dutch neo-Renaissance façade depicts themes of travel, trade and Amsterdam's history
