  • Amstel is the river running through Amsterdam
  • The river used to flow into the IJ bay, Amsterdam's waterfront, but now ends at Muntplein, in the center of the city
  • A fishing village was established at the Amstel's mouth in the 12th century
  • In 1222 a dam, Amsterdam, was built and the village turned from fishing to trade
  • This is when the expansion of a city began that evolved into one of the most powerful trading empire by the 17th century
  • Magere Brug (Skinny Bridge) is an 18th century wooden double drawbridge that is very popular among Amsterdamers
  • The river banks are lined with ships, many of which are houseboats, and offer an excellent place for a nice stroll
